Why is this measure important?

Non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) can decrease mortality by 2% in patients with pulmonary edema.

Definitions of key terms

Pulmonary edema: an abnormal buildup of fluid in the lungs. Positive pressure ventilation: The provision of air under pressure by a mechanical respirator, a machine designed to improve the exchange of air between the lungs and the atmosphere.
